Dental Hygenists

The dental office provides an excellent venue for providing tobacco cessation interventions.

Dental Hygienists have a wonderful opportunity to lower the rates of tobacco use in their patients. If all hygienists work together and take full advantage of those 'teachable moments' when they're caring for their patients, thousands of patients will stop smoking permanently across the state.

Intervening with patients who use tobacco does not have to be difficult, awkward, or time consuming. A highly effective intervention method can be easy and seamless to incorporate into practice; Ask your patient if he or she uses tobacco; Advise the patient to quit; and then Refer the patient to the New York State Smokers' Quitline. This can be done in one of two ways:

  • Give the patient a New York State Smokers' Quitline wallet card
  • Help the patient fill out a Fax-to-Quit form and then fax it back to the Quitline
